  14. I run a program that searchs for, and issues advisory cancels for,
  15. large binaries in the akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, and sci
  16. hierachies.
  17.  
  18. I have issued 3 cancels for large binary files (average size 560,567
  19. characters - total size 1,681,702 characters) posted to 3 different
  20. unmoderated discussion groups in the comp and rec hierarchies as
  21. follows:
  22.    1 rec.games.video.nintendo
  23.    1 comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim
  24.    1 comp.dcom.modems
  25.  
  26. The cancels in the alt groups are an unavoidable consequence of the way
  27. cancels work.  A cross-posted article is only one article.  When it is
  28. canceled from one group it is canceled from all groups.

  30. This pointer is being posted to each affected group listed above.

  32. If you want to see exactly which file was deleted from a particular
  33. group, or the criteria that I used to select it, read the full report
  34. in news.admin.net-abuse.announce.  Look for AR160 as in the
  35. subject of this pointer.  The full report can also be found in
  36. alt.nocem.misc and alt.retromod.

  38. There has been a long-standing consensus among news administrators that
  39. binaries belong in binaries newsgroups, and not elsewhere.  There also
  40. seems to be a consensus supporting the cancellation of large binaries in
  41. discussion groups as long as appropriate protocols are followed.

  43. In my opinion, the best way to distribute binary files is via ftp or
  44. the web.  With the ready availablity of ftpmail servers, even uucp
  45. sites can retrieve binaries from ftp sites.
  46.  
  47. However, if you really must post a binary to Usenet, please post it to
  48. an appropriate binaries newsgroup such as alt.binaries.misc.  Then, if
  49. you like, post something in the appropriate discussion group telling
  50. people where to find the binary in the binaries group (a pointer to
  51. the binary).  This will permit news administrators and users to decide
  52. for themselves whether to receive the binary files.
